On March 19, 2001, James was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the side-man category. Together with Johnny Johnson, Keith Richards, Aerosmith, Queen, Paul Simon and Steely Dan. After the induction ceremony, James appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman.
"The recognition is really exciting and also surprising. I didn't know about it untill my friend [producer] Andy Paley called after hearing the news on television. The Hall of Fame called me to congratulate me a little later. I feel like I won an Oscar or something. It's wonderful."
