James Burton has had a front row seat to music history. He has played with the greats and won lots of awards along the way, including a Grammy.

“I look at it as truly a blessing and a great honor,” said Burton.

Elvis Presley was one of the biggest names Burton ever played with.

“Elvis was a great guy. A great talent, a great singer, and exciting to be around. When I went to work with him in 1969, I became family,” said Burton.

It was while working with Elvis that Burton met Whitney Houston.

“When we opened in 1969 in Las Vegas at the International Hotel with Elvis, her mother Cissy was singing with us. She (Whitney) was about maybe 6 or 7 years old standing behind the curtain, and every night after every show she was so excited to be there,” Burton remembered.

He watched as Houston transformed from the girl hiding behind the curtain to one of the most successful pop artists of all time.

“Knowing what a great talent, and just an incredible loss to the world and the music industry. I’ll dearly miss her,” said Burton.

Burton compared the loss of Whitney Houston to Elvis or Michael Jackson.  Jackson is another famous voice he’s had the pleasure to work with. Voices he said were gone too soon.

“We’ve lost so many wonderful, great entertainers. I don’t know what to say. It makes you want to, every day is special and we need to not take that for granted,” said Burton.

James Burton’s trademark “chicken pickin’” style – bright, crisp and concise – is one of the most unique sounds in country music, and a huge influence on rock guitar as well. Burton got his start when he was 14, writing “Susie Q,” for Dale Hawkins, and became a teenage star when he joined Ricky Nelson’s band in 1957. With Nelson, Burton created his distinct technique: He used a fingerpick and a flatpick, and replaced the four highest strings on his Telecaster with banjo strings, so that his guitar snapped, popped and stuttered. “I never bought a Ricky Nelson record,” Keith Richards said. “I bought a James Burton record.” In the late Sixties and Seventies, he convened Elvis’ TCB band and became a go-to guy on country-minded records by Joni Mitchell and Gram Parsons, and still tours today. “He was just a mysterious guy: ‘Who is this guy and why is he on all these records I like?’” says Joe Walsh. “His technique was allimportant.”

The 60-minute special captures 17 of Holly’s best-known songs along with a couple of obscurities from the Sept. 7 show at the Music Box in Hollywood, where Cobra Starship, Patrick Stump, Shawn Colvin and emcee-singer Peter Asher also gathered to celebrate Holly’s music. Others in attendance included Holly’s widow, Maria Elena Holly, and Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers, who with his brother, Don, toured with Holly before his death at age 22 in a 1959 plane crash. He would have turned 75 on Sept. 7.

The event also incorporated taped messages from other high-profile Holly fans, including Ringo Starr, Keith Richards, Brian Wilson, Jackson Browne and Monty Python alumnus Eric Idle.

Nicks sang “Not Fade Away” and “It’s So Easy”; Isaak and Michelle Branch dueted on “Heartbeat”; Nash, Scaggs and Asher teamed up for “Rave On”; Stump sang “Oh, Boy!”; and Malo handled the ballad “True Love Ways.” An all-star ensemble, also including guitarists James Burton and Albert Lee and a cameo vocal by Everly, finished the show with “That’ll Be the Day.”

A DVD from the concert will be available as a thank-you gift to PBS subscribers who pledge at a prescribed amount during the December fundraising drive. The concert was staged conjunction with the release of the second of two Holly tribute albums this year: “Listen to Me: Buddy Holly,” which featured most of the same performers at the Music Box show. The other album, “Rave On Buddy Holly,” featured another batch of Holly devotees, including Paul McCartney, Nick Lowe, Lou Reed, She & Him, Patti Smith and Cee Lo Green, offering new takes on his music.

James Burton, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and legendary guitarist for Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson, will be honored for his efforts to bring music to children at St. Jude’s Hospital, schools, the underprivileged and veterans at “Matters of the Heart” Gala & Golf fundraiser for Pathways Core Training.

Held at the Four Seasons Las Colinas on October 14th and 15th, entertainment for the gala will be world-renowned fingerpicking guitarist, Doyle Dykes, along with a special guest appearance by Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Billy Swan.

Pathways Core Training is about heart: communicating, connecting and giving from the heart. The “Matters of the Heart” Gala & Golf is the biggest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds benefiting these three heartfelt causes: Pathways Teen and Family Camp – Empowering Parents and Teens to Communicate. Military Service Men and Women and their Families – Supporting those Who Serve Us. Families of Children with Special Needs – Caring for the Caregivers.
